TETAS : a practice

“It is also true that creation comes from an overflow so you have to learn to intake, to imbibe, to nourish yourself and not be afraid of fullness.” Anais Nin

TETAS : a practice

“It is also true that creation comes from an overflow so you have to learn to intake, to imbibe, to nourish yourself and not be afraid of fullness.” Anais Nin

Tetas, is the root word of the Indonesian word “menetas“, hatching (of an egg to become an animal), meaning to exit, escape, to be born.

This exhibition chooses ‘tetas’ as its theme/title to represent the ideas that ‘hatch’ from idea-blocks or dead-ends, or ideas that are ‘born’ spontaneously from creative individuals, either those at the beginning of their career as artists, or established artists.

In this exhibition, a piece of artwork is not the goal itself. Rather, the exhibition aims to emphasize the process of discovering ideas, and then executing those ideas into works. The creators who participate in this exhibition have been stimulated creatively, so they can further cultivate a habit of discovering spontaneous ideas. These ideas can be stored for future creations, or they can be executed immediately.

The exhibition refers to participants as ‘creators’ rather than ‘artists’, to acknowledge that there are creative individuals featured here who do not self-identify as, or are not yet recognized as, artists. They even come from diverse educational backgrounds, though still closely related to creative work—say photography, visual communication design, and fashion. The sub-theme of this exhibition, A practice, refers to a process of learning and training where non-artist participants can acclimatize themselves to the art exhibition environment, and where established artists can add to their ‘flight hours’ or portfolio.

The exhibition is conceptually a ‘work in progress’, where works are allowed to develop together with the spontaneous emergence of ideas. Thus, unlike most exhibitions where exhibited works remain as they are throughout, here they are given the opportunity to develop within the 3-4 days from the beginning of the exhibition to a few days before the end of the exhibition. With such a format, exhibition goals can be better met, that is to stimulate ideas continuously, and to train the mind to always think positively. Hopefully we can avoid prolonged idea-blocks in the future.

There is a variety of works on display, from drawings, paintings, installation, animation, photography, vidoeography, to cinemagraphs.
